I have been working as a violinist in jazz and rock since 1982, when I started playing in Bristol, working with Andy Sheppard, Tim Richards and Mike Britton.
When I moved to London in '85, I had the chance to play with some more great players - Dick Crouch's Paz, Phil Lee, Brian Godding, Keith Tippett, amongst many others. I met Daevid Allen in '88, and began a long musical partnership with him that included the rebirth of Gong, as well as various smaller projects and recordings. Returning to the North West in '96 saw me playing in Toolshed with Graham Massey, an old pal from my teenage years, and developing plenty of new musical friendships across genres, e.g. playing with Elbow, Lamb, Katie Ware, Bryan Glancy, and Salsa Pa'Gozar.
More recently, I have been working with Martin Archer, the majordomo of Sheffield-based label Discus.

Now playing every Thursday from 7.30 pm at RedWillow Buxton,

1 Cavendish Circus, Buxton, GB SK17 6AT

I play jazz: mainly the usual canon of standards that most post-bop jazzers draw from, for example, great ballads like "Body and Soul", or "My One and Only Love".
You could hear medium swingers, such as "All the Things You Are", "Sweet Lorraine" or "Stella by Starlight".
More "up" tunes might include "Have you met Miss Jones?, or post-bop classics like "Joyspring". I might do some Charlie Parker material, not often heard on violin.
There are various blues, as well.
There always have to be some Latin tunes, maybe by A. C. Jobim, or even something more Cuban, like "Oye Como Va".
I also like to add a few jazz originals that have become standards, like "A Night in Tunisia", "Recordame" or "Spain".
Then there are the tunes that not many other people play, "Joy" by Gerry Niewood, or Ralph Towner's "Icarus". Jarrett's "Memories of Tomorrow" and "Country". Kenny Wheeler's "Everybody's Song but my Own". Recently I have added "Loro" by Egberto Gismonti.
The list is always changing. Sometimes I am asked to play to a theme, such as tunes from particular countries to accompany regional dishes for a restaurant's themed night.
